Heroes

There are very few people in the world who haven’t had a hero to look up to at some point in their life. It doesn’t have to be red, white, and blue like superman, but maybe something more simple like a mom who works all day just to feed her children at night. Or maybe even a social activist, like Ghandi. According to Christopher Reeve, the actor for superman in the 80’s, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.”. Regardless of the image and form the hero comes in, they have always been around for many generations, for people of all ages. It might make someone ask, why do we have heroes? Why do we look up to a role model and hope to be like them one day? Is it foolish of us? Despite all these questions that form when one thinks about the origins of a hero, it is certain that humans hold a primal need and want for heroes because it is necessary to believe that no matter the circumstance, there will always be a small glimmer of hope for survival. Survival can mean many things to many people, but here it 's the overarching idea of getting better, or making it through a crisis. It is at these times, where we look up at the skies and ask ourselves what a hero would do in our situation. So why do we rely on heroes to get us through the day? We may not think about magical flying men or people who can lift trucks everyday, but perhaps it is in our roots to believe in something…
