A hero is someone who is admired for their acts of courage and bravery. Although David is the main character of the novel, The Chrysalids true hero is Michael. This is demonstrated by his composure and bravery during times of trouble, his willingness to make sacrifices, and his leadership skills. For these reasons and the examples that follow Michael proves himself to be the hero of the novel time and time again. In The Chrysalids Michael is part of a group of people who possess the power of telepathy they are able to communicate with each other and thusly they become a tight-knit group of friends who often must face dangerous situations. During the groups discussion on what they should do Michael said “If the worst comes to worst, and you can’t save Petra, it would be kinder to kill her than let her go to sterilization and banishment to the Fringes” (Wyndham 120) this shows that in times of danger where life is on the line Michael was willing to keep together and let everyone know what must be done if the worst is to happen. Michael’s ability to make the tough decisions that many others couldn’t have made is one of the crucial factors to the survival of his alleys and without his bravery and composure in tough times it is likely that David, Rosalind, and Petra would not have survived. Many characters in The Chrysalids have to make sacrifices in order to stay alive in the harsh world created by both the mankind of the past and the mankind of the present. Without his Bravery, his Sacrifices, and his ability to lead the group efficiently there would have been no hope for David and the others. Michael puts others before him and shows true selflessness, without him there to lead the group they would have been lost, without him there to sacrifice for the group they would have died, and without him there to be the brave soul that holds the group together in times of danger and fear, they would have not made it as far as they did. Michael made the decision that keeping the group alive was the most important thing he could do and he put that above all else, leaving no man behind and never choosing his own life over the lives of other. For these reasons and many more, Michael is the true hero of this
