Social Exchange Theory A good example of social exchange theory can be seen in the relationship between Hilly and Skeeter. In Hilly’s mind, she is a giving friend; she sets her friend up on dates all the while building her confidence. Because of these deeds, Hilly expects Skeeter to assist her in publishing her idea on the “Sanitation Initiative.” For Skeeter, this relationship is not worthwhile because she does not agree with Hilly’s beliefs and behaviors. There were times when Skeeter was noticeably uncomfortable. Although Hilly does arrange dates for Skeeter, this does not outweigh the costs. To the untrained ear, the women talking about pie to Hilly might sound a bit strange, but they’d likely not think too much else of it. However, in this co culture, it means something entirely different. Depending on the context, they aren’t referring to any pie, but the “special pie” Minny made for Hilly. At one point, Charlotte uses this jargon as leverage against Hilly. Hilly’s mother, Miss Walters, also uses this jargon as a humorous stab against her daughter multiple times.
