I decided to base my first video assignment off of the movie The Help. This movie based in Mississippi when African American women were employed at white homes to clean, cook, and take care of the children. This movie tells about the hardships that they had to go through before equal rights were established. After much consideration they decide to meet up with a white lady, named Skeeter, and write a book based on their personal stories. The main point of the video is to make the world aware of the hardships that African American women had to go through on a daily basis in hopes to change the way people look at them.
Throughout the movie there are many elements of verbal and non-verbal communication. Some examples of verbal communication would be the racial slurs that were common throughout the era and intended meanings of discriminatory phrases. Minny’s husband is very masculine because he knows that he has to provide for the family and he has to have things his way even if it means being abusive. Skeeter demonstrates a collectivist personality because she wants to do what is best for the world, not just her life. She is writing the book to change how people view “the help” regardless of the consequences she might endure. Hilly is very individualistic because she wants things done that will better her life and only her life. She is trying to make it so that all of the help have to use the bathroom outside in an outhouse because she is concerned about her health and she is convinced that African Americans carry different diseases. The help have less power and aren’t allowed to make their own decisions which shows that it is a high-power distance
