Tate Taylor The Help Analysis

The Help, released in 2011 and directed by Tate Taylor is a film which follows the story of a southern author Skeeter as she writes a book detailing the life of African American women, as they work as maids. The film is constructed to represents the perspective that African American women are being treated with inequality and discrimination while working as maids for white households. This perspective is constructed through the construction of setting, as the film is set in Jackson Mississippi during the 1960s the development of setting plays a crucial role in constructing the perspective as this was a time of segregation and civil rights when inequality and discrimination were at a high point. The voice over of the character Abilene Clarke also constructs this perspective as she recites the laws of Mississippi and gives an insight in to the life of the maids. This perspective has been constructed through the setting as the help was set in Jackson Mississippi during the 1960s where segregation laws played a crucial role in separating the African Americans from society which clearly resulted in inequality and discrimination. The voice over narrations also construct this perspective as Abilene recites laws from the Mississippi law book as well as offer an insight into the life of maids and how many of them were forced to leave school at the age of fourteen. Hillie Holbrook also contributes to the construction of this perspective as the characterisation of Hillie clearly represents inequality and discrimination to the African American maids as her character has been constructed to represent a real racists through being the town
