The Help Movie Vs Book

Kathryn Stockett’s “The Help” is a novel that reveals the prejudices of southern “class”.
The novel is based in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960’s and focuses on three main characters: recent college graduate Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan and two black maids, Aibileen and Minny. As a southern gal, Skeeter is supposed to behave like the other esteemed women in her society and strive to become a housewife. However, Skeeter’s dreams are to live as a writer. One day,
Skeeter receives a letter from a publisher in New York asking her to expose the truth about servant life in the south. With the wary help of Aibileen, Minny, and about a dozen maids,
Skeeter anonymously writes about their personal experiences and confesses the truth about southern hospitality provided by

Lastly, the endings in the movie were slightly flawed. In the book, after getting fired,
Aibileen gets a job writing for the newspaper, the Jackson Journal. In the movie, Aibileen is fired and her character’s future is not revealed. In addition, Minny does leave her husband for abusing her in the movie, but what the movie left out was that she finally left him after he tried to murder her. Chavez 3
Personally, I favored watching the movie “The Help” over the book. I do appreciate the small details included in the book, however, I would rather spend two hours of my time watching something come to life rather than spending two days trying to visualize every detail. For people who have time, like to visualize and create characters in their minds, and appreciate small details,
I would recommend reading this book. For people like me who like to hear real voices, sound effects, and music, see real people, and spend less time on something, I would recommend watching the movie. Either way, however, the book and the movie are both fantastic and I would recommend reading or watching “The Help” to anyone and

Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan is a single, white, well educated behind the scenes advocate for civil rights focused on changing the situation of division between white southern households and black maids in Jackson, Mississippi. Skeeter is determined to write a risky hard-hitting novel set to change the way white people perceive African Americans in the 1960’s. The controversial book written by Skeeter will serve as justice and closure for those who feel they have been treated as second class citizens by their employers, and gives them a real opportunity to tell their stories to the world. Skeeter is described at the beginning of the story as a painfully tall, not so pretty girl who lives on a cotton plantation with her parents and belongs to the local Junior League. As a typical member of the Junior League, you agree with everyone, smile, and nod.…

A few important character connections and details were in the book that were left out in the movie. In the book, for example, Kim and Mia’s relationship wasn’t as detailed in the movie. It didn’t show their fight like it did in the book and all of their childhood between the two seemed to be missing from the movie. Mia and Kim had some important things that occurred in their childhood which I thought was important and should have been included in the movie. Her grandparents also weren’t in the movie as much as they were in the book.…

Skeeter does not believe this is the right way to treat anyone and decides to write a book from the maids point of view. One scene from The Help that showed skeeters reaction was when all of the girls were at Elizabeth 's house and started talking about how black people should not be allowed to use the same bathrooms as the whites.(Taylor) Skeeter felt absolutely terrible about this and was shocked that they would say all of these terrible things, especially in front of Abilene. At one point she felt so bad that she personally went up to Abilene and apologised for the things that were being said. This shows Skeeters moral beliefs because she is making it very clear that she thinks that we should all be treated the same.…

There was hardly any room for storylines for real human connectedness between the black and white women. The author could have acknowledged racism as a vehicle of white privilege rather than espoused hatred throughout the book, yet the appeal of this fictional narrative would have not met critical acclaim or popularity. The novel did not capture the core of life in Mississippi in the 1960’s, where women endured and resisted inequality without the help of a “ white saviour” to rescues them, worked in their employers homes and raised their children alongside their own, wishing those children would not fall victims to lynch mobs or racist acts of violence. Skeeter’s role as the appointed saviour to the alienated maids demonstrates my argument that white characters will often become a more central theme in novels involving black characters. If literature or films such as the “The Help” are going to include people of colour as main characters, than their voices should not be ignored in order to appease mainstream audiences by throwing in a white character and focusing on their voice.…
