The main idea of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is that picking on people who are helpless and have not done anything wrong or caused harm is a terrible thing. Whereas The Help directed by Tate Taylor is about racial prejudice and the hate directed toward blacks in respect to their race. Each story has a distinctive storyline but both share similar features and themes. For example both stories are set in the South during times of segregation. Blacks and Whites people live in separate communities, and Jim Crow laws are still very prominent. To be racist means to have the belief all members of a certain race possess the same characteristics or abilities, and to consider a specific race as inferior or superior to another. In the film Aibileen observes the bridge game being played at the Leefolts. One of Ms Leefolts friends, Hilly tells her that she 's working to have a law passed that would make it mandatory for white families to build outside bathrooms for their black employees. She believes that the help should have a separate bathroom which she claims is necessary to prevent catching the different diseases that black people carry because they are dirty. This is a racist action because no race or person should be stereotyped with untrue facts or be considered unequal of the same rights and freedoms just because of their skin colour . Just because someone 's skin colour is different than someone else 's does not mean they are worth any less or are inferior to another race in anyway. This is similar to Tom being convicted and being considered guilty. "I ain 't ever seen any jury decide in favour of a coloured man over a white man."(chapter 21) This shows the reader that the verdict the jury gave was based solely on the fact that Tom Robinson is black and not based on the evidence Atticus provided to prove that he is innocent. These two stories teach that in order to be fully understanding of a situation one must consider the perspective of the others involved and take that into consideration. To be courageous one must set aside any apprehension and do what is right no matter how scary. The readers are able to realize how unfairly some races were treated and also recognize the progress for racial equality that has been made since the era these stories were set in.
