The Help And Lord Of The Flies Literary Analysis

Ever wondered if The Help by Kathrine Stockett and Lord of the Flies by William Golding are comparable? These two novels are not comparable to the theme, setting, and symbols. William Golding’s Lord of the Flies is about a group of British school boys who get stranded on an island; their goal is to try to get off the island while still being civilized and not turning into savages. The Help by Kathrine Stockett is about a white woman named Eugenia ‘Skeeter’ Phelan who writes a novel about African American maids and how they were treated in Jackson, Mississippi in the early 60’s. The theme of Lord of the Flies is Dual Nature of Humanity which is going from good to evil but in this case civilized to savage. Throughout the novel the boys all demonstrated this theme, some more than others. Jack is a good demonstration of the theme Dual Nature of Humanity. Throughout the novel Jack becomes more and more savage the longer they stay on the island. The first sign of savagery in the novel is when Jack and the boys went to go hunting for pigs and they started to chant “Kill the pig! Cut her throat! Spill the blood!” (Golding 79). The Help took place in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962. Throughout the novel Stockett would flashback to events relating to the Civil Right moments. Most of the novel takes place in the homes of white people. In the novel it is the ‘norm’ to have a separate bathroom for the black maids. If you did not have a separate bathroom you could catch a ‘disease’ Miss Holbrook believes that “99% of all coloured diseases are carried in the urine… whites can become permanently damaged” (158) by these diseases.
