Later, in the discussion with Paul Marcus, the statement was made that if you do not see race, you are ignoring racism. (cite) This lecture was possibly my pivotal moment in the course and in my development of my racial identity. It was also stated that we see ourselves through a lens, and often do not see the privilege that is occurring on a regular basis. One thing I have stated in class was that it is 2017, and that I did not realize white privilege was still a ‘thing’ that is occurring today. I used an example of getting stopped by the police and never getting written a ticket. Currently, I understand systemic racism as the historical development and continuation of racism against minority groups within areas such as the wealth gap, employment, housing discrimination, incarceration, drug related arrests, infant mortality, and healthcare. This is a concept that I did not grasp in the beginning of the class. I did understand institutional racism, but now I understand how systemic racism intersects with institutional racism.
