A person who experiences prejudice is denied a chance to explain who they are. When Sam arrests Virgil he said, “Get in the back seat and shut the door. Make one false move and I’ll drop you right then with a bullet in your spine (16)”. When Virgil gets arrested he does not say anything about who he was or where he was going because he did not get a chance to. Sam was very strict at that time so he would have listened to virgil because he already judged him of being guilty of something later as a reader you learn that Virgil is actually a cop. Secondly, people who are victims of prejudice feel like minority. In this text you can see how Virgil feels "Excuse me, gentlemen, but can you tell me where I can wash? Gillespie answered immediately 'the colored washroom is down the hall to your right ' Tibbs nodded and disappeared (28)". Virgil Tibbs just finished examining the dead body and needs to wash his hands. When reading this the reader can see that Virgil feels uncomfortable to Gillipies answer. Virgil just nodded and accepted it when he told him to go to the colored washroom, although Virgil does not say it, he feels less of a person when he can not go the normal washroom, this is also an example of segregation. Lastly, prejudice makes victims vulnerable to violence. Frank Schubert, member of city hall said, “A few of the boys are getting ready to teach him his place, and they will, too (86)”. In this text the city hall members are discussing and threatening the black man (Virgil) that has entered the town of Wells, and are not happy that he is going around asking people about the Mantoli murder. However he had given Sargent a chance at comfort even though Dorset May or may not have known the relief shelter was filled to complicity. This was just a chunk of contextual evidence that supports my claims to one person not representing the entire white ethnicity and over symbolism. Another brief piece of contextual evidence is how Carolyn also speaks of how Sargent “Feels lost because the white community denied him” look back over “On the road” Sargent never showed any form of caring for his white counterparts for all the reader knows he could have an equal dislike for them as well. Reading “on the road” gave me a sense of equality and hope for the future, hope that things wouldn’t continue to be divided, things would change for the better as a defeated looking Sargent looks at his bruised fingers. Sargent tells the cop “I’m gonna break down this door too” then he yells once more with a fiery passion “IM GONNA BREAK DOWN THIS DOOR”.…

In fact, his father would always tell him about it and even told him that white people were not to be trusted but he did not listen to him. When he moved out to New Jersey, he encountered himself with what his father had always warned him about: racial discrimination. Bars, restaurants, public bathrooms, barber shops, among others public places, were not meant to be shared by black and white people.
