Summary & Explication Essay
Around the Northwest there has been a change in the last few years-- there is less rainfall and hotter summers as Oregon slowly begins to mimic California’s dry weather. Now, because of a mistake that no one can undo, a scenic part of my home state is engulfed in flames and people are debating the appropriate punishment for those who started the fire. The heartbreak of the Eagle Creek fire: Editorial is an editorial written by The Oregonian/OregonLive Editorial Board. The Oregonian is the daily paper for Portland Oregon, my hometown. OregonLive is its online version.
The editorial board writes about how beloved areas of the Oregon Gorge are burning and it is as if a family member has been diagnosed with cancer. This language is strong and personal. This one was caused by human stupidity, but bankrupting a family and putting people in jail won’t fix anything. “Working to right a wrong just might.” Sentencing the teen to a lot of community service where he can work to rebuild what he destroyed--trails, culverts, and bridges; replant trees; and having him talk to teens and pre-teens about how a few minutes of mindless fun turned into a disaster that changed his life. The editorial board is looking for a way to reconcile the one who started the fire with their extended community and the physical world which was affected. Rather than simply being punitive, they are looking for a way that the punishment involved will help fix the damage that was caused. In the same way that a thief might be compelled to return the goods they stole, the editorial board wants the one who started the fire to attempt to repair some of what was
