One statistic from the book that fascinated me the most was that women were twice as likely to die after coronary bypass surgery. According to researchers at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles of the 2,300 coronary bypass patients, 4.6 percent of the women died as a result of the surgery compared to the 2.6 percent of men. This statistic leads me to the theory of gender inequality in health care. The researchers found that when it came to women getting the coronary bypass surgery they were spending less time on the heart-lung machine than men. When women complained of having chest pain doctors did not take them as serious as they did men.…

Non-ST Segment Elevation Heart Attack A heart attack occurs when a blood vessel on the surface of the heart (coronary artery) is blocked and interrupts blood supply to the heart muscle. This causes that area of the heart muscle to permanently scar. This blockage may be caused by cholesterol buildup (atherosclerotic plaque) within a coronary artery. The plaque cracks which creates a rough surface where blood cells attach, forming a clot. Chest discomfort that happens with exertion and goes away with rest is called angina.…

Introduction. Ischemic heart disease remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide 1. Intermediate coronary artery lesions are responsible for about 80% of acute coronary syndromes2. Accurate assessment of the severity of intermediate coronary stenosis represents an everyday challenge for interventional cardiologists. Fractional flow reserve (FFR), which is simply derived by the ratio between distal (Pd) and proximal (Pa) pressures under conditions of maximal hyperemia, represents a reliable and reproducible tool to functionally assess the severity of coronary lesions of equivocal stenosis.…

Coronary artery disease continues to maintain its status as the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. It is a high priority of clinicians not only to manage the acute symptoms of coronary artery disease, but also to prevent future major adverse cardiac events, such as acute myocardial infarction and cardiac death. Percutaneous coronary intervention is a nonsurgical procedure to treat atherosclerosis within the heart’s vessels (cite). Percutaneous coronary intervention, a balloon angioplasty procedure, involves inserting a metal wire stent within a constricted coronary artery. Using a balloon catheter with guided x-ray imaging, the stent is implanted as the balloon simultaneously inflates.…

Coronary arteries are one of the most important parts of the body because of many different factors. Heart muscle needs blood rich in oxygen to function and pump more blood throughout the circulatory system. If the blood does not carry enough oxygen, the veins will carry it away. Blood can only be delivered when the heart is relaxed; because once they contract they become narrow. These arteries are structured differently as opposed to many of the other arteries in the human body.…

In scientific ways, a heart attack is when a “heart attack occurs and when the flow of blood to the heart is blocked, most often by a build-up of fat, cholesterol and other substances, which form a plaque in the arteries that feed the heart (coronary arteries). The interrupted blood flow can damage or destroy part of the heart muscle.” (Cliff Staff 1.)…
