The healthcare field is an ever growing and complex system where individuals corporate with one another to provide the best service possible. Within these integrated teams and throughout the health care field there is a hierarchy in place to help support the rapidly evolving organization. Middle managers as stated in McConnell (2014) “is the manager position residing in the hierarchical layer between first line supervisors and higher management, such as department or division head or executive, depending on organizations size; they generally supervise the first line supervisor” (p.4). In today’s health care field middle managers are crucial in the functionality of the system and are seen as facilitator between upper management and the department. …show more content…
Holloway through his profession is that of information. The process of information can be described through roles such as monitor, disseminator and spokesperson. Prior to any duties being fulfilled, one must obtain necessary information. The role of monitor requires seeking, observing, and checking information both in and out of the work environment. In order to be affective managers gather information, and retain what is necessary in order to produce an action plan. This can mean monitoring outside factors for example a natural disaster that can affect work condition because people might be hurt and will need to be rushed to an emergency room. Just as important is monitoring work environment which can include strategies put in place that affect productivity and actual staff member’s wellbeing and feelings. Mr. Holloway mentions always trying to be alert and aware of multiple situation. He frequently checks the news for accidents or any other factor that can influences his emergency room. He also mentions managing by wondering and how it is important a step back to truly notice changes within the staff; that are other times overlooked because of being so closely involved. As stated in McConnell (2014) a manger who is out there to see and be seen accomplishes much more than a manager who never leaves the office” (p.216). Wheatear through monitoring or other channels once information is obtain it is imperative to inform others. Mr. Holloways describes upper ward communication typically through emails starting from staff nurse, charge nurse, assistant director to director. In order to work efficiently through the health care field especially an emergency room good communication skills are imperative. Not only is Mr. Holloway responsible for monitoring, and disseminating information but he is also their spokesperson. As stated before managers are seen as representatives for the organization and department they oversee.
