Among those 54%, 53% have answered that they lack motivation to make lifestyle changes even though they acknowledge that they require intervention. 40% have previously attempted to make healthy changes but were unable to meet their goals. There are many factors that cause obesity for nurses including genetic anomalies and metabolic disorders, but one definite contributing factor is that nursing is an emotionally and physically intense profession. They have long shifts, mandatory overtime, and shift rotation. They are always are time pressured, because critically ill patients have no time to wait. There are many incidences of injuries such as needlestick, infectious disease, and sometimes are exposed to violence or threats that have impact on the caring behavior of nurse, which make them always on the edge. These stressful aspects in taking care of patients and own stressors in life cause emotional exhaustion that leads to abandonment in their own health. Eventually they acquire unhealthy habits such as choosing a quick but unhealthy food choices for meals, and lack of motivation for physical activities.
