The purpose of this paper is to discuss the most prevalent health problem, obesity, within my community, which is Franklin County, Ohio. I will show our county average and compare it to the national average, along with the mortality rates. By analyzing this health problem and applying the principles of epidemiology, I will devise a plan to promote health and help the prevention of this issue using Milio’s framework. I will also discuss both short term and long term goals to help reduce these devastating statistics within our community and compare this with the Healthy People 2020 national goals.

Introduction of Obesity in Franklin County, Ohio

Within Franklin County, Ohio the most prevalent health issue today is obesity (City of Columbus, 2016). Obesity is a chronic disease that is also affecting the state of Ohio, and it is also the leading cause in the United States for mortality, disability, and increased healthcare costs. Statistics show that the number of American’s with obesity has increased over the years and continues to rise (Obesity Society, 2015). Franklin County has an obesity rate of 26.6% of the population compared to the national average of 15.3%. Children within Franklin County that is considered obese or overweight is 32.8% and has been climbing (City of Columbus, 2016).
