As health professionals, our goal is to live a healthy life. Not only a healthy life for ourselves, but to keep others health, as well. Our interventions with everyone in our field is orientated to keep them safe and healthy. Whether we are in the community, at the health department or in EMS, everyone’s health is in our best interest. To do this we need to understand what it means to be healthy. For some people, being healthy is eating a healthy diet and exercising. For others it is staying away from illnesses that decrease our quality of life. As a current employee in the emergency management system being, healthy is a combination of physical health and mental health. Currently I am perusing a career as a Paramedic Firefighter. The desire to want to become a firefighter has always been there. What kid does not want to be a firefighter? Coming into my freshman year of college I had to finally decide what I wanted to do with my life. I was set on wanting to help people. With that, I knew I wanted something medical. I noticed that I am naturally attracted to red lights and sirens. I also noticed that I still wanted to slow down every time I drove by a fire house. After some thought, I decided to go with my gut and join the EMS field. The joy I get from helping someone is unlike any other. I have not really been a part of any life or death situations but when the time comes and the outcome is good, I will be glad I chose the path that I chose. Currently, I am only an EMT-Basic and plan on advancing my license to EMT-Paramedic. I am also applying for a position with the Lincoln Fire Protection District, which is a volunteer fire department. If all goes well, I aspire to be a full time Firefighter Paramedic and plan to move up in the rankings. This will only come with time and experience and I hope that they both will
