Unfortunately, in the United States, heart disease remains the number one cause of death in both males and females (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). It is indicated, “About 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year, that’s 1 in every 4 deaths” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015, p. 1). Fortunately, many healthcare providers/organizations recognize the current issue and current interventions are being implemented across the nation with hopes to decrease the incidence of deaths resulting from heart disease. Healthcare organizations are working together to implement various interventions with the hopes to improve the overall cardiovascular health of American citizens. A popular program that was initiated in 2011 and continues to improve cardiovascular health in Americans is the Million Hearts Initiative. This document will provide an overview of the initiative, as well as a definition, background, goals, and the clinical significance of the initiative. This document will also share barriers faced that prevent change, as well as various findings from the evidence-based literature that supports the Million Hearts Initiative.
