People volunteer for many different reasons every day. Everyone has heard of volunteering and how it is good for the community and the volunteers. There are numerous benefits of volunteering, whether it be beneficial to the volunteer or to the community. Volunteering can affect the person volunteering and the town they are volunteering in greatly. Volunteering benefits the community in many different ways, but it also benefits the people that volunteer. Volunteering can be exceedingly beneficial to someone who is volunteering by teaching them new skills that they did not know they would ever develop. Stephanie Watson said in an article, “Studies have shown that volunteering helps people who donate their time feel more socially connected, thus warding off loneliness and depression” (Watson). Many people do not know that volunteering has personal health benefits. One of the main health benefits volunteering has is it helps prevent depression and the feeling of loneliness. A lot of people struggle with depression and feeling lonely, but studies have proven that volunteering can help someone avoid feeling these emotions. Not feeling lonely or depressed could influence someone to get more people involved in volunteering or to get themselves involved in volunteering more often. A lot of times, volunteering requires many people, like a group. Working in groups requires someone to interact with people socially, which can prevent them from feeling lonely, and not feeling lonely can prevent depression. Working in groups allows new friendships to be made. When someone who struggles with feeling lonely or depressed meets new people through volunteering, they could come to realize that they are not alone and have people to talk to. Volunteering can make the volunteers happy, incentivizing them to do it more frequently than just every once in a while. When someone volunteers in their community, they may be helping the community in more ways than they realize. Most communities could use change and when people get together and volunteer, the community could be greatly impacted. Some communities have old buildings that need to be restored, that is something a group of people could come together and volunteer to do. If there is trash all over the side of the roads, one person could go out and pick up trash involuntarily. If they decide to pick up trash on the side of the roads, people driving by could see that persons act of kindness and decide to do it themselves, leading more people to volunteer. After people volunteer in a community, problems can be solved. Volunteering in a community also can correct issues. Volunteering has a lot of benefits that some people are not aware of.
