When the Girl Scout Research Institute conducted a survey it was shown that “Many girls think these programs reflect reality, with… 50% saying that real-life shows are “mainly real and unscripted.” This is influencing the way children and teenagers think, making them believe that females are ill-natured creatures. Equally as important as the last statement, reality tv play into stereotypical beliefs. West Virginia Senator, Joe Manchin, says that Jersey Shore, a reality tv show, “plays to ugly, inaccurate stereotypes.” Buckwild being set in West Virginia feeds to the belief all West Virginians are hillbillies or rednecks.…

Reality TV has been around since the late 1940’s when Allen Funt headlined a show called Candid Camera. This was followed in 1950 with a show named Truth or Consequences. The 1970’s had programs called Real People and That’s Incredible. These shows were, for the most part, considered wholesome entertainment that the entire family could watch and were quite tame in comparison to what is on television today. Reality TV exploded in the 2000’s and it remains one of the most popular genres in television.…
Reality television ranges from judgement shows, to shows that help others, for example, the show Catfish is where two guys attempt to help average people, who have fallen in love with another person online. This show is very popular because every episode is different. Also, one of the guys has personally gone through this experience in which he met a girl online and they fell in love. When it time for them to meet, the girl he met was different from the girl he fell in love with online. In short, the girl lied to him, and because of this experience, it has resulted in this show which helps others meet the people they have met or fallen in love with online, finally meet in person.…
The Real, the Bad, and the Ugly by Cassie Heidecker is an interesting example of analyzing the reality TV epidemic and in addition to the people that view it. The author starts out by listing things that go into a reality TV production and things that happen in real life in order to state that these are two different things despite the idea that reality TV is supposed to be “real”. The mundanity of real life is emphasised here vs. the idea that reality TV is scripted and has a lot of extra work put into it to make reality TV more appealing to a broader audience. The author goes on to say that real life is boring which I thought was funny and a little ironic considering that later the author mentions that she is somebody who sets aside time…

In her essay “Getting Real With Reality TV,” Cynthia Frisby examines how Reality TV has became one of the most watched television programs. Frisby then discusses her beliefs that, while watching Reality TV programs, viewers tend to draw comparisons between themselves and the reality star. She then gathers a team of researchers who conduct surveys that ask simple questions about participants relationship with Reality TV, and the team performs a content analysis on these participants while they view certain Reality TV programs. Ultimately, she suggests that her research shows that almost all participants showed some type of comparison between themselves and the reality star. Throughout her essay, Frisby uses adequate amounts of evidence to support…
Taking a stylistic approach breeching on a film within a film, The Truman Show explores human life from the perspective of life as art and entertainment. Truman comes to the realization that his life is a lie and leaves his false reality to join the real world (Weir). When human life becomes something to be observed as entertainment, it develops an aura.…
In the article “Ethics and Reality TV: Should We Really Watch?” , Austin Cline questions the morality and beneficial ethics of reality television while touching on the ruination it has caused on the actual perception and interpretation that society possesses of what “reality” truly is. As this programming has evolved over the years, it has become clear how obvious and staged these so-called “real life events” truly are. One of the first shows created to showcase this kind of entertainment was Candid Camera. Cline touches on this series which was first aired on August 10th, 1948.…
Although people despise paparazzis, some celebrities are fine with pictures and it also might to benefitial to the paparazzis because they can make money which is better than a minimum paying job. Evidence to support that is in the article” Stars Beg”Don’t Shoot!” to Armies of Paparazzi” by Donna Freydkin and William Keck, it states,” I’m always really nice to them; all they have to do is ask”, says Courtney Love, who objects only to use of long lenses, which have tried to capture her going to AA meetings. It then later states,” If I recognize someone and know they’ll go to their editor and at least try to get something nice in about me, then I will give (them) everything.” A person may go against the counterclaim by saying that the celebrities only do that to leave them alone and support that with evidence by saying ,” In the article,” Stars Beg,” Don’t Shoot!”…
