The Haunting of Sunshine Girl
In depth examination: Looking at the title, “The Haunting of Sunshine Girl,” I can tell that this story is about a ghost with possibly the name “Sunshine”. Examining the cover, you can tell the story has a creepy, kind of disturbing purpose, like this story is meant to make your heart thump, to make sure no monsters or ghost are behind you ready to take your life.
Paige McKenzie’s horror story; “The Haunting of Sunshine Girl.”
The purpose of this story is supposed to make your heart thump, to cover your eyes at night, trying to just go to sleep but you can’t because the author got what she wanted: Fear. She creates this fear in the story because how she describes the geological setting; …show more content…
The historical setting molds this story into its creepy place by what happened at Sunshine’s sixteenth birthday party; a spirit passed through her. “The moment the spirit touched her, her temperature dropped from 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit to 92.3; her heart rate jumped from 80 beats per minute to 110” (1). Yea, creepy right? And the fact that a homicide occurred a year before Sunshine and her mother moved into their home in Washington! Oops, too much? The author concealed these signs, she didn’t want to make it too obvious, so she was creative and “painted” the indications …show more content…
Later on in the story Sunshine heard the noises of the murder, (then in the story she thought it was a dream but later finds out the ghost-girl was indicating to how she died). Sunshine heard screaming and splashing in the bathroom, “The crying is louder and louder still. Please. Please. Please! As the cries get louder, it becomes clear: the sounds are coming from the bathroom” (57). And once they were able to get the door open, no, the door slammed opened by “itself”; there was nobody to be found. The water was a big symbol for the story, the water represented the water demon; a demon that uses water to get to its victims and lives in moist climates. And so the characters change throughout the story because of the demon: Katherine (sunshine’s mother) changes because she becomes possessed only to hurt sunshine. Sunshine changes because, well, because she was a big wimp but then she becomes emotionally and physically stronger because of the demon. And so this is where the theme comes into play: love is our determination to keep fighting. The characters connected makes up this
