Charles Dickens was a man of many works that led him to fame in the world of literature in the 1800’s. His early life was filled with many struggles with money, but it never stopped his push to learn more. Dickens wrote many novels novellas, and his way of publishing, by serial, was a unique way to get more money out of his works. His later years following his divorce with Catherine Hogarth proved to be hard times for him and his mental state. After his death, Dickens left a legacy of works that influenced the modern world by adding a new meaning to characters and by displaying the lower class and bringing a new light to the less-fortunate. His Christmas series of novellas were categorized as fairy tales. Dickens himself even said he was taking old nursery tales and “giving them a higher form”(Bloom 153). A Christmas Carol was by far the most popular piece of fiction that Dickens ever wrote. It was published in 1843 as a part of the Christmas series (Charles Dickens Info). At the beginning of A Christmas Carol, we see Scrooge, who is a miser who shows no concern for the rest of mankind. He is greedy and wants no help and doesn’t want to help. He is visited by the ghosts of past, present, and future who show him what his life was, is and will be like if he continues this trend of evilness. At the end of the novella, Scrooge has decided to change and become a generous and caring man (Charles Dickens Info). The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain created as sort of a full circle to his Christmas Series. It was published in 1848 and was less iconic than A Christmas Carol. He brings back the whole idea of ghosts in this novella showing the main character the spirit of the holidays, rather than the idea of the holiday itself (Charles Dickens’ Other Christmas Ghost Story: “The Haunted Man”).
