The Haunted Asylum Research Paper

Improved Essays
Even the heavy downpour was not enough to stop our annual Halloween party. Hosted by the Class of 2018, this year’s fright night was quite the scary one. While there was delicious food and an awesome dance performed by the sophomores, the main attraction was of course, the Haunted Maze. The maze spooked even the bravest of our students, sending shrill shrieks ringing throughout the building. There was a scare at every unexpected corner, scarers with gruesome makeup, rooms filled with challenging puzzles, and even an old bathtub that we had to crawl through. The haunted asylum theme tied in all the elements perfectly. Whether they were too excited or simply frozen from fright, everyone left with (somewhat) a smile on their face.

Overview of 19th/20th Century Asylums: After 1808, parliament approved public financed hospitals for the mentally ill public, and 20 were assembled. Following 1845 it got to be obligatory for areas to construct asylums, and a Lunacy Commission was set up to screen them . Before the centuries over there were upwards of 120 new lunacy hospitals in England and Wales, lodging more than 100,000 individuals . “Ground plan of Tone Vale Hospital, Bishops Lydeard” -Feb 1947 Sympathy toward the affliction from what was considered dysfunctional behaviour steadily expanded and was especially grasped in the social and political approach of the Victorian time. In one of Ray Bradbury 's best sellers, Something Wicked This Way Comes, he combines a few things people fear in real life as well as dark fiction. I chose this particular book because I enjoy the darker stories and occasional horror movie. With the upcoming Halloween day, I couldn’t have picked a more appropriate book. This story focuses on two teenage boys and an adult, all of which are preoccupied with their ages. Jim and Will are teenage boys who want to be more mature and older.…

To many, the end of October is a time of corn mazes, costume parties, and haunted houses. Many cultures celebrate harvest festivals during October, though none are as well-known as Halloween. Because Halloween is primarily descended from the Celtic festival of Samhain, when some think of Halloween, they think of bats and cats and witches. However, although Halloween as it is currently know is a wholly American creation with regional rituals handed down by generations, it did not become a “full-blown American holiday” until the turn of the century (Bannatyne). Because of the contemporary nature of Halloween, without Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Sylvia Plath’s “Lady Lazarus”, and George A. Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead, the holiday as we…

Today Halloween is the second most commercialized and profitable holidays in today’s world, where trick or treating, costumes, and decorations all are apart of some of the favorite things we like to think about with Halloween. Although in Rick Bass’s short story Antlers, the story starts with the town’s annual Halloween party, where the traditions they have are a little less traditional. In the story the party itself holds a very symbolic meaning and has many underlying tones throughout the entire story. The importance of the party being specifically for Halloween is crucial to the story, as a lot would change otherwise. The Halloween party in Antlers is a little different to our own ideas and ideals for the festivities.…

This picture is a lot like the movie Monsters University. In this movie, Mike Wazowski, one of the main protagonists, wanted to scare for a living whenever he got older but he was always told that he wasn’t a scary enough monster in order to do so. He studied the art of scaring ever since he was a kid and finally got to work on his obsession whenever he was accepted into the scaring program at Monsters University. He forms a team with a not-so-popular fraternity and they join the annual Scare Games. The Scare Games is an event where monsters are pitted against each other to compete in challenges ranging from running through tunnels filled with poisonous sea urchin like objects to a giant scaring simulator where the monsters scare a fake child in order to get the highest score.…

The paper concludes with an examination of John Scott's (1985) Weapons of the Weak and Goffman's (1961) Asylums. By studying peasants in Kedah state in Malaysia, Scott introduced the concept of 'everyday resistance.' He documented how covert acts of resistance enable people to undermine the persistent insults they endure. Goffman, too, detailed the strategies used by inmates to challenge subordination and mistreatment in asymmetrical relations of power. It shall be argued that defiant and law breaking activities are overt forms of resistance, utilised by young men to express their irreverence towards mainstream social norms and mores.…

As president of my high school's Key Club, it is my job to organize service activities for our members to volunteer in. One of these activities is the local haunted house sponsored by the Front Royal Little League. This fundraiser for the little league started when Mr. Bryan Binnix stepped in to save it from plummeting. Mr. Binnix discovered that the program wasn't making enough profits until his brother, Mr. Bobby Binnix, wanted to make a change, thus they proposed the idea of having an annual haunted house. Since the first year in 2012, the fundraiser has raised approximately $9,500.00.…
