Even though I was not a big fan of the first part of the book, it got better as we read continued to the end of the book. In part 5, N. Lane talks about the enforced suicide of cells called apoptosis. He stresses on the importance of it, because if it fails it can in many cases lead to cancer. Many more new cells are produced than actually survive, because the over-production is needed for development and repair. The faulty cells or the cells that are no longer needed are programed to commit suicide by the mitochondria for the greater good of the organism.…

This theme travels throughout the novel, and helps Starr through every one of the obstacles she faces. Another recurring theme is, speaking your mind for the better. Protesting is an example of this theme, many people in the novel participate in protests that are centered around getting justice for Kahlil. Starr claims, “What’s the point of having a voice if you’re gonna to be silent in the moments you shouldn’t be?” This quote shows if you feel passionately about something, talk about it and if you don't talk about it, what's the point of having a voice.…

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Braken is a book of loyalty, adventure, trust, friendship, self-sacrifice and even fear. The author wants us to believe that though some journeys are dangerous, involving sacrifice, even if they’re not what you had hoped, it’s not about what happens at the end, it’s about the very journey itself. Ruby Daly is the main character of this book, along with Liam “Lee”, Charles or “Chubs” and Suzume or “Zu.” In the beginning of this book, Ruby was trapped inside of a camp for 6 years of her life, being treated like she was less than human until she finally had the chance to escape, a worker of the camp revealing their true identity, helping Ruby escape. Even throughout the beginning the book, it was evident that the journey that the main character was about to face was one where she would find her true self, where she belonged,…

Arturo Perez-Reverte' The Club Dumas was written in 1996 in Spanish then translated into English in 1998. A suspense thriller completely on its own. The story follows Lucas Corso, a self-described book mercenary investigating two rare books: an Alexandre Dumas manuscript of The Three Musketeers and an ancient satanic text called The Nine Doors. Corso, slowly puts the pieces together in the two books as he becomes part of a never-ending game leading to a secret society. Corso is well described and developed, but the other characters lack depth, with only a few exceptions.…

Her need for love becomes clear as the strange woman appears and Amanda’s troubles seem to stand by. This novel is executed well, and is able to very clearly show its original story and themes of truth, love, and change. The concepts might have been too mature for me to handle, but I enjoyed reading the novel very much. The novel was very thought provoking and it challenged me to think about a lot of the themes, more than any other novel has before. The characters and stories told in this novel created a feeling of learning new things and I believe that it is a wonderful story for those who like novels of this…

When searching for a book to read, I look for various things. For example, if the story sounds appealing, whether or not I feel like I can get lost in it, and if the artwork on the cover can draw me in. Since I am an avid book collector, I look for books that are in the best possible condition. With some exceptions, I will buy a used novel that may have dog-eared pages or minor markings not original to the text. Based upon this, I chose a specific novel that I have read, against the advice of others.…

Imagine picking up a book for the first time. Think about the feel of the stark pages and the excitement of starting a new journey in a world that is unknown. Tales of lost love, robot invasions, or horror stories are all books that allow our imaginations to run wild. Books bring forth new culture and perspective into the world, but most importantly they allow us to express ourselves emotionally. Authors have the ability to convey messages that make us cry tears of forbidden love for characters like Romeo and Juliet, or become frightened by the works of Stephen King's IT.…
