The Hatchet Summary

Brian Robeson’s parents are divorced. He is going to see his father in the Canadian oil fields. Before he gets on the airplane, Brian’s mother gives him a hatchet. Brian is haunted by his parent’s divorce, even more so because he caught his mother cheating on his father before the divorce, but didn’t say a thing. On the way to the oil fields, the pilot of the plane suffers a heart attack and dies.

Brian struggles to control the craft and eventually manages to send an emergency transmission. Brian accepts the fact that he will run out of gas. When he does, he crash-lands the plane into a lake. He swims to the shore. Brian decides to make a shelter. Brian gets hungry and decides to find something to eat. He gathers berries, which he eats

Brian finds turtle eggs and eats them. Brian makes a spear out of wood. After many tries, he catches a fish. He cooks the fish over the fire and feels very accomplished. Brian gets sprayed in the face by a skunk. Brian kills a foolbird, and again, feels very accomplished. He starts to have a reliable source of food- the fish and foolbirds.

Brian also gets attacked by a moose. He sleeps, but is awakened by a tornado. Brian’s shelter is destroyed, but he quickly notices that the tail of the plane is above the water and therefore accessible. Brian builds a raft and floats to the plane. He retrieves the survival kit. Brian unpacks the food and supplies. He feasts, grateful that he had been able to retrieve it. Brian finds an emergency transmitter, but thinks that it is trash. He accidentally leaves the transmitter on. As he feasts, he sees a plane overhead. He quickly lights the fire to signal the plane.
The plane picks up Brian and brings him home. It turns out that the pilot wasn’t a search pilot, in fact the authorities gave up looking for Brian two months ago. He was a fur buyer. When he gets back to civilization, he marvels at the amount of food available. Brian wants to tell his dad about his mother cheating, but it is revealed he never
