How Are Humans Selfish

Improved Essays
We, as humans, are a very selfish species. Ever since we were put on this earth about two and a half million years ago, we have been using the land and all of its resources selfishly. There hasn’t been an issue with that until here recently, as technology has gotten a lot better and shows the damaging effect humans are having on earth. With this new research available, there are still people who seem to not care which really shows the selfishness in people I mentioned earlier. Now that there’s research showing the deadly effects us humans are having on the world, it is time to make a change in how we’re living. We are tearing our world apart and if we don’t act fast, we could be putting future generations in jeopardy.

Nicholas Stern, a British economist, was on Ted Talks and gave a speech about climate change and what we can do as a species to slow it down. He began his speech talking about a time he visited China to speak at a university. He talked about how riding his bike was a good way of getting around, but that now riding your bike in China is much different. It’s very clustered with vehicles and

Stern also expressed how bad it could get in the next decade if we don’t take these steps. The earth is our home and will be home to future generations and we cannot afford to keep destroying it. Once resources are gone, we can never get them back and I don’t think that is getting through to people. All the things mentioned in this paper that help stop global warming are easy steps to take. If you appreciate life, the earth, and even yourself you should start taking these steps to keep our planet healthy. Mr.Stern’s ideas are easy steps and are very plausible. It is up to all of us as a whole to start caring about the planet we live on. Don’t be selfish and have a “Well it’s not going to affect me in my lifetime” thought process. Think about your kids, grandkids, and other generations who will inhabit this planet later on. Sometimes, it’s not all about

While humans are very powerful, smart species, we are very selfish and often just look out for ourselves. Although humans have a pretty good reputation the sad truth is, we are very selfish, and when push comes to shove take care of themselves rather than others. In the famous trolley situation with the lever and five people, I would pull the lever because I couldn’t see the 5 people die and that seemed to be the best answer for me. In the second situation I wouldn’t push the person because one it is illegal and two I would be killing this person.…

Mark Bittman, author of the article “The Aliens Have Landed” published on the New York Times April 2, 2014 issue, argues that we need to take action to stop climate change. Bittman begins to support his argument by comparing our ignorant behavior towards climate change to the “retreating French” during World War II. He then informs the recent news from the Panel on Climate Change to emphasize the negative effects, and sarcastically compares them to aliens invading Earth. He next proposes a public works project and provides several examples of what can be done to start addressing climate change before it is too late. The author’s purpose is to…

Recently, Pope Francis called for “drastic changes in our consumption, lifestyle and production from superficial and unsustainable habits to more mature means of caring for our environment.” He said that “we have a moral duty to care for the environment and when we do that, we are connected intimately to one another.” This is the message that Ishmael, the teacher in the book, wanted spread among the people across the world. As self-absorbed, destructive, greedy, and selfish people, will we take the challenge to impart change around the world? If civilization is to continue after we are long gone, we must change the minds of the people today for generations to come.…

There is a famous disney movie, Beauty and the Beast, about a prince who gets cursed and is turned into a beast who must fall in love with someone, otherwise he will remain that way forever. In the beginning, the beast is thought of as this terrifying monster who everyone is afraid of, but towards the end of the movie, he turns out to be a nice and caring character who is actually the complete opposite of scary. People just assumed he was terrifying because of the few actions that the movie presented at the start. Comparatively, in Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild, Chris McCandless is presented as a selfless man for feeding the homeless and donating money to OXFAM, a charity dedicated to solving the hunger crisis. However, he constantly leaves…

Michael Pollan's essay “Why Bother” argues that each individual should contribute in making insignificant life changes in order to improve the conditions of climate change. Although without co-operation and scientific certainty, it wouldn't be possible to make the required level of change. During this essay, Pollan addresses that it would not greatly impact human life making small changes to support the environment. Instead, the difficulty is realizing it will only take small changes from everyone to achieve a dramatic change. Pollan uses both for and against arguments thought this essay so the readers consider why they should bother.…

Before I read this book I never truly thought the way that you think could actually change so much about how you work. I know that we all learn and think differently but I have been taught that nobody has a bad way of thinking. But this made me realize that when we stop and really think sometimes there can be a bad type of thinking not bad as in you don’t get a result but bad as in the type of result you get. It was hard for me to barely just get past the different types of thinkers before I started thinking back to the people I know and the teachers I had.…
