Crime is an issue in South Africa which occurs daily. South Africa has a very high rate of murders, assaults, rapes (adult, child and infant), and other crimes compared to most countries. Crime affects all social and ethnic groups of South Africa. It has a very negative effect on all age groups of our society. Most emigrants from South Africa state that crime was a big factor in their decision to leave. Being such a dilemma in South Africa it affects every person in a different way.

Crime has a negative effect in a number of ways. From costing companies profit, resulting in many shutting down or having to reduce in many aspects or causing many families to separate or live in fear for a long period of time.

People find themselves paying thousands of rands every year to protect themselves from crime occurring in their community or area. Security companies earn millions a year from people who pay this fee to protect them from crime.
There are so many negative effects that crime has on a society that entire books have been written on the subject. The costs of locking up a criminal, who will pay no taxes and only drain from society while locked up plus the costs of the actual crime are simply staggering.
I can speak from a very personal level, as my parents and younger brother (age10) were involved in an armed robbery in our home in Kloof. It occur early one Thursday evening as my mum was putting my brother to sleep, four armed robbers forced their way into our house. They pointed guns at my family, tied them up and pulled the trigger on my parents several times, while they ransacked our house and stole thousands of rands worth of goods and precious things.
