The Hang Art Gallery Analysis

This modern architecture, called the “Hang Art Gallery,” located on 565 Sutter Street of San Francisco, was designed by a famous architect named Willis Polk and was constructed in 1921. The original owners were Chamberlain and Proctor, but the builder for this particular building is unknown; though the architecture is built to portray both ancient Greek and Roman features. The structure demonstrates the ancient columns, or orders, that was once used to support not only ordinary architecture, but also religious temples. This architecture currently functions not only as an art gallery, but also below it, are some clothing boutiques. As both the Roman and the Greeks displayed their sculpted deities and emperors in their architecture, this modern …show more content…
Yet, there are many more Roman elements featured on these orders. Unlike the Greeks, the swelling of the shaft starts to become more narrow, not much emphasis was put into the entasis. The capital of the order is a lot more simplified, and appears to be slender. The thinning of the capital, however, makes it appear a lot more detailed than those of the Greek’s. In addition, the orders had a base attached at the bottom of the column. The attachment of the base was the Roman’s modification, and the column has come to be known as the Truscan order. Although, the entablature is designed to look more like the Roman Composite order with the mixture of the Greek Corinthian order. There are various components of these orders within the building. At the top of the orders, the architecture illustrates the three layered architrave. Then, there is the traditional frieze, and the hybrid between the Composite cornice and the Corinthian dentil. The architrave has three layers, each layer is portraying different thickness and size. Then on top of the architrave, the building has a thin looking frieze. Finally at the peak of the roof, the Corinthian order dentil is layered on top of the Composite order cornice. This modern building was also painted green, making the architecture more lively and vibrant. The Greeks and the …show more content…
The Temple of Aphaia, and The Pantheon are great examples for displaying their sculpted deities within the architecture, and it is seen as a form of art in ancient and modern society. Just like how these ancient Europeans displayed their form of art, the Hang Art Gallery also has many of the modern day arts displayed in the interior of the building. Below Hang Art, there are two clothing stores (The Designer Cosigner & Trendy Mondays Finn Boutique), which has clothed mannequins installed behind the windows. These mannequins are comparable to the sculpted Gods and Goddesses by the way they are presented. Although one may serve as a religious icon, and the other for commercial purposes, there is no doubt that both were exhibited for the public to explore and to

Rapson Hall: Sampling and Blending the Past In the first century BC the architect Vitruvius wrote that architecture is made up of three separate elements: Utilitas, Firmitas, and Venustas.5 In ABC of Architecture, James O’Gorman focuses on Utilitas, or the functional aspects of a building, to analyze types of architecture. He does this through examining plan, beginning with a belief that plan is “the developed diagram of function”4 and that the way the building is to be used is created as the plan is laid out. Because of this, analyzing the arrangement of its plan should allow a person to understand the way it was designed. A central generalization O’Gorman makes is that plans are either drawn in an additive way or in a divisive way.…

Public art is all around us, and when you take a moment to look around you’ll find some amazing pieces. While walking around downtown there is always one mural that catches my eye every time. Located on the back side of the Burton Cummings Theatre (formerly known as the Walker Theatre, 364 Smith Street.) is an untitled piece by Winston Leathers (1932-2004). Maybe it’s the vibrant colours, or the fact that I spent just over 14 hours waiting outside the theatre two years ago waiting to see my favourite band perform. Either way, I can’t help but do a double take when I happen to walk by.…

Rome was the centerpiece of Earth’s eastern hemisphere and stretched from modern day Spain to the beginning of the Caspian Sea. Rome may have immortalized its own ideologies and structures such as roads or the Julian Calendar, named after Roman emperor Julius Caesar, but this civilization has also amended and created its own variations of concepts and ideas already laid out by former, less popular civilizations, through the means of cultural diffusion. Some of the characteristics and developments which mainly reflect on the dynamic of cultural diffusion in Roman civilization include but are not limited to…

Rome was a polytheistic culture. This meant they believed in many gods and goddesses that all represented their own aspect of life or nature. The Romans were so devoted to them that they built massive buildings of worship to them known as the Pantheon. Not only did the Romans took what the gods said as law, but even incorporated them in their everyday lives and their ceremonies as well. This can be seen on the three wall paintings located in the Roman exhibit in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.…

As you can see in the layout columns surrounded the temple in a traditional Doric manner (8x17). The larger inner area otherwise known as the cella, is where the statue of Athena was housed (2). The room behind that was a treasury housing all of Athena’s treasures. This is where we see the unusual use of iconic order with Doric as this room was supported by four columns of the iconic order (). The statues and art in the interior were a direct depiction of the culture in Athens and was appreciated by the people of Athens.…

The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art consists of an abundant amount of unique and interesting pieces of art. While touring the museum, I found several pieces of art in which were rather amazing at how they were created; one could tell a lot of thought and hours of dedication were put into each piece. While there were so many pieces to choose from, I chose two pieces which stood out to me the most to discuss in my paper, one is The Jackleg Testament, Part One Jack and Eve: A Woodcut Motion Picture and the second one is Still Life with Papayas and Clementines; both of which are richly unique in their own way. The Jackleg Testament, Part One Jack and Eve: A Woodcut Motion Picture is exactly what is stated; it is a movie that is in fact an hour and two minutes long.…

Roman architecture has long been a defining model for some of the greatest works during Renaissance and Neoclassical revival eras. The Pantheon, Maison Carrée, and other such temples and buildings of the late BCE-early CE period have their clear influence on works like Jefferson’s Virginia State Capitol. However, not all Ancient Roman designs saw their full potential of influence on future works, leaving only the ancient architecture as just a ruin to be preserved through the ages. One such work, the Flavian Amphitheater, or Roman Colosseum as it is more commonly known, can be considered the greatest amphitheater ever designed. Not only based on its size, but also the intricacy of its hypogeum and importance in Roman culture support this,…

At first glance, the Royal Ontario Museum’s (ROM) historical collections are obviously laid out according to continents in an East-West dichotomy, but with the addition of new exhibitions, one particular exhibit space caught my attention. On the map, the gallery is titled Africa, the Americas & Asia-Pacific (hereafter known as the AAA gallery). The gallery was dedicated to telling the story of the indigenous cultures of the world, such as those in Africa, the Philippines, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea. Because the gallery featured indigenous peoples of other regions, I decided to compare this to the “Canada, First Peoples’” gallery, which was created through a consultation with individual aboriginal groups. However, comparing…
