The Handsomest Drowned Man

Visualize yourself in an empty world. Surrounded by nothing but silence and darkness with no one around or no one to care, just living in a world where all that exists is pain and hate. This is the world that the winged man lives in the poem "the old winged man" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The vulnerability that this "angel" has represents humanities society and all its imperfections. Humanity not only has imperfections but also has perfections, which is represented by the drowned man in " The Handsomest Drowned Man" by Marquez as well. Marquez focuses on the aspect of humanity and not so much the interaction of the main characters but on the villagers, the people, us. This man, Esteban, washes up on shore as a stranger immediately by the women is accepted as one of their own. From the beginning these people made him special-viewing Esteban and altering him into a god like being who is perfect and absolute. These villagers accepted Esteban with open arms and gave him a story. They gave him the utmost respect and paid attention to his details as a person. The attention Esteban received may have been more than what he experienced in life. " They noticed too that he bore his death with pride." It is unknown on how the women came up with this conclusion but it shows the dedication and honesty that is shown towards Esteban. These women noticed his large and impressive attributes. Valued his body and mind as a whole which soon became a conflict of the men in the village. The women did not have to bring him in and make room for him but, they did. They even washed him and clothed him and cherished him; although, the clothes weren't couture it was the thought that mattered. To the villagers Esteban was ordinary- a gift. Lives for them had changed and
