David Fromkin argues in his book Europe’s Last Summer that Germany would manipulate the events leading up to WW1 for a war to have Austria as an ally. A major component to this argument is the idea that WW1 started with a minor war in Serbia against Austria and Germany gaining Austrian assistance to help them in their war against Russia. There were many controversial topics throughout the world during the 20th century such as WWI, WWII, the Civil Rights movement, women’s rights, and the Vietnam War. Although this was a difficult time for most people (especially since the stock market crashed in 1929) there were a few influential people (Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks) that stood out from the rest in leading the fight for equality. What sparked the uproar in the east that eventually lead to the beginning of “The Great War”? On June 28th, 1914 a Serbian nationalist assassinated the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand, while he was visiting Sarajevo a city in the Bosnia-Herzegovina province.…

General Pershing led the American Expeditionary Forces, with Henri Gouraud leading the French Fourth Army. By the next day, the attack had been done and was a success. The French captured five miles of enemy land and the Americans were able to advance by two miles. The battle halted for a short while in the beginning of October due to the American troops needing reinforcements, but started once again on October 4, 1918. Thirteen days later, the French had covered twenty miles on enemy land, reaching the Aisne River and by this time, the American Army was being commanded by Lt. General Hunter Liggett.…

Many countries entered the war since it was more beneficial for them to fight alongside their allies instead of single-handedly fighting enemy countries. Russia, being an ally of Serbia, and Germany, an ally of Austria-Hungary, are forced to join the war due to their alliances and treaties with the two countries. Their agreements allowed Serbia and Austria-Hungary to have more numbers, strength, and support to fight each other than without. As Germany advances to strike other countries, those nations are forced to join the Allies to defend themselves against the Germans. France allied with Russia, allowing them to create a two-front war that would not have been possible otherwise, weakening Germany.…

The year is 1940, and as of the 5th of June Adolf Hitler’s German forces had invaded, conquered, and now occupied France. At the mercy of the Germans, France was on their knees and all chances of taking their country back were doubtful. On June 18th, French General Charles de Gaulle’s voice broadcasted on the radios nationwide as he delivered the “Appeal of June 18”, a call for France to not secede in the fight against Nazi Germany. I believe Charles de Gaulle’s ability to present an effective persuasive piece in his compelling speech is exceptional. He is able to appeal to his audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos which allows his rhetoric to be effectively persuasive as well as motivating.…

Germany is responsible for causing several countries to enter the war, such as Great Britain. The German military created the Schlieffen Plan, which called for the German army to race west through Belgium to defeat France and then return to fight Russia in the east. Being able to pass through Belgium was vital to the Schlieffen plan because the French had troops all along their border with Germany, and breaking through the French-German border would be slow. However, Belgium, being a neutral country, refused. Germany invaded Belgium, which resulted in Great Britain entering the conflict.…
