The Guiding Statement: Trying To Represent Myself

The guiding statement for what I do is trying to represent myself in all of my endeavors. In every piece of work I do, I try to show people the maximum ability of what I can do on a certain piece. I believe that in one’s work that they are represented, and I always would like to represent myself the truest. I want to show the world who I am in the effort I put from what I do. I believe that a lot of people want to take the easy path on things, not trying as hard on things that they deem do not matter, and I feel like when they are doing that, they are truly cheating their full potential within themselves. People do not put forth the effort to fully portray themselves. I am not an artist; I enjoy writing, but often with a more analytical and …show more content…
I know this might seem hypocritical after I talked about how people refuse to get involved in the conversation, but in this case it seems that people just like to pick a side on an issue and refuse to change it, or try to work for a compromise. People like to just identify themselves in what they are involved in, be it religion, stereotypes, or that culture.I understand that many people think culture is a good thing, and so do I; I feel like there are some bad aspects of culture though in culture, such as cultural norms. I feel like cultural norms can be a bad thing in society, because sometimes they can just isolate people from another. People tend to associate themselves with people that are like them from a cultural standing, causing people to stray from other cultures. Cultural norms also help establish an us against them mentality, that can be bad at points because it means that if you a part of a certain culture, its normal for a person to act a certain

However, anyone outside of the US might feel upset and inferior, even if they live in the US. (“Ethnocentrism.”) Cultural relativism, on the other hand, focuses on the idea that all cultures are equal, and there is no “true” cultural standard. While this allows more diversity and acceptance, it can also cause a lack of community. An example of this is mannerism differences in certain cultures, in some cultures; it is rude to not sit next to someone if there are open seats.…

In class this past week, we did an activity called the Signals Game, which I had actually done once before in high school. When I did it the first time, I was part of culture B, and I remember that I felt like such an outsider, even though there were other people that were in my culture with me. But this time, when we did it in class, I was part of culture A. For some reason, I found I was much more comfortable being in the group that tried to welcome the others than I was actually being part of “the others.” When I thought back on this, I think this really says something about society as a whole.…

It’s fascinating how people have been able to make so many different definitions for the word culture; a word that was thought to have one singular definition. People of all cultures are unique not just in their methods and ways of life, but also in their definitions of culture. One person can describe culture as something that can bring family and a community together, but another person may define it as the exact opposite; something that tears people apart and in turn will rip apart a community. Neither of them are wrong or right however, because culture is something that is tangible. Culture is something that changes with time instead of against it.…

This is due to the fact that mores are essential to the values of different culture. Norm violations occur when a person thinks or behaves in an abnormal way, a way that differs from the expected behaviors within one’s culture. All of us are a part of culture. We all live our daily lives and all take part in creating culture every single day. I have dabbled with art ever since I was a toddler. I would draw anywhere I went: school, home, and even at church. It started out as a hobby, but soon, I immersed myself into the world of art by integrating art with medicine. I have always found medical dramas to be particularly intriguing. Developing into this interest, I started writing my own medical journal, where I took notes from a book called Gray’s Anatomy and from the medical dramas I watched.…

However it quickly becomes something that is taken for granted and due to this people can overlook their own personal culture and assume that it should be the norm for others. In fact each culture believes that about themselves because in fact we all have our own version of norms. When a different culture partakes in a ritual or practice it seems foreign and odd to us because it is not something that we learned at a young age to be engrained into us. Our ethnocentrism drives the sense of others being strange in comparison to us because we use our own culture as an evaluation of others cultures values, norms, and behaviors. Our norms are what we expect is the right way to do things therefore unless we practice cultural relativism we use those norms as a base when trying to understand other cultures.…

I wasn’t born an artist or particularly skilled at all, but I knew from a young age that talents are what set us apart from others and make us unique. In elementary and through middle school, I was encouraged by my teachers and parents to find my talent or interest. However, nothing genuinely interested me and I didn’t consider myself talented. Every person in this world has an individual creativity built within them. My individual creativity personally took me a while to uncover, I only recently unearthed my true creativity during my junior year. I express my creativity through makeup, poetry, painting, drawing and redecorating my surroundings such as my room which I like to think of as my sanctuary because it’s the only place I can disconnect myself from everything, focus on myself and reflect on my days. Makeup is my main outlet of expression since that’s the one that’s in the spotlight and is a quote on quote paraded for the public eye to see when used correctly and minimally to enhance ones beauty it makes a person look more presentable and put together. I was inspired to write…

Thus, culture can be referred to as an ideational system” (p.24).…
