The word I chose to define was the term sports. Lots of people have different opinions about the word sports and what it means. Dictionary.com defines sport as “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.” I have always defined sports as an activity played by people that involves either physical or mental skills. I have always seen sports mainly as competition and people or teams competing against other people or other team in a competition to try and win. As a sport fan my entire life, I have seen sports in a favorable light. Watching professional

In this article, they cited a study by U-M professor Andrei Markovits and a U-M student Adam Green. They did a study about the soccer video game called FIFA and how this video game has been extremely important in the growth of soccer in the United States. In the article, Markovits quotes “The game's growth on the fields of the country's suburbs and among its middle class has been nothing short of sensational. We argue that among many decisive factors in soccer's massive consumptive proliferation has been the EA FIFA video games.” (Bickel, 2016) Video games are a unique way for people to learn about the sport and gain an interest in it. Instead of just watching their favorite soccer players on TV, they can control them and play with them as well. But while the FIFA video game has made soccer more popular among younger people, the study in the article did not mention anything about the game increasing the amount of people playing the sport. While there may be evidence of the game causing more people to play the sport, it is not discussed in the study. There can be arguments made that the game just causes people to sit in their rooms all day and play the video game instead of going outside and playing the …show more content…
Louis that could attract a Major League Soccer team to the city. Per Koran Addo of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, “The private ownership group SC STL originally put together a plan calling for taxpayers to fund $80 million and private investors to spend roughly $95 million to build a 22,000-seat stadium west of Union Station.” (Addo, 2017) Soccer fans in the area have been excited about the possibility of a professional team coming to St. Louis. It would create more jobs, and help businesses in the surrounding areas. But there has been opposition to the stadium from taxpayers who would have to pay up to $80 million as the quote above mentioned. While many people are not opposed to having a soccer team in St. Louis, they do not believe that taxpayers should have to pay for a stadium to be built in the city when the money could be used for other things in the city. This can link back to talking about sports in the definition section of this paper. Sports are sometimes viewed in a negative way by people due to the attention it gets. With high schools putting lots of money into sports programs and leaving other programs like art and music with nothing, sports have garnered a negative view from lots of

The passion for soccer in Sioux Falls can be improved if high school soccer games begin to be televised. Often times football, baseball, and basketball games are shown on local TV broadcasts. From personal experience, I have never seen a high school soccer game broadcasted on TV in Sioux Falls. This is a problem because other sports are getting more exposure and as explained above, more exposure leads to more popularity. However, the trouble with throwing the word “sport” around is that most people would not be able to correctly define exactly what a sport is. Some will say there has to be a ball, but what about hockey? They don’t use a ball. Others say a sport has to require skill, but someone can be skilled at balancing a pen on their lips but that is not a sport. According to Merriam-Webster’s definition, a sport is a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other.…
