The word I chose to define was the term sports. Lots of people have different opinions about the word sports and what it means. Dictionary.com defines sport as “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.” I have always defined sports as an activity played by people that involves either physical or mental skills. I have always seen sports mainly as competition and people or teams competing against other people or other team in a competition to try and win. As a sport fan my entire life, I have seen sports in a favorable light. Watching professional …show more content…
In this article, they cited a study by U-M professor Andrei Markovits and a U-M student Adam Green. They did a study about the soccer video game called FIFA and how this video game has been extremely important in the growth of soccer in the United States. Per Koran Addo of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, “The private ownership group SC STL originally put together a plan calling for taxpayers to fund $80 million and private investors to spend roughly $95 million to build a 22,000-seat stadium west of Union Station.” (Addo, 2017) Soccer fans in the area have been excited about the possibility of a professional team coming to St. Louis. It would create more jobs, and help businesses in the surrounding areas. But there has been opposition to the stadium from taxpayers who would have to pay up to $80 million as the quote above mentioned. While many people are not opposed to having a soccer team in St. Louis, they do not believe that taxpayers should have to pay for a stadium to be built in the city when the money could be used for other things in the city. This can link back to talking about sports in the definition section of this paper. Sports are sometimes viewed in a negative way by people due to the attention it gets. With high schools putting lots of money into sports programs and leaving other programs like art and music with nothing, sports have garnered a negative view from lots of
