The Growth of America Throughout American history, there has been many different documents that have lead to the growth of America. Each one of these documents have had different effect on America. These documents each had a crucial part in American history and without them America would be very different. I will be talking about five important documents that have changed the growth of America from the book “Essential American Documents and Speeches” Vol.1 and Vol.2. An important document to America’s growth is “Ain’t I a Woman” by Sojourner Truth. This document talks about slavery and women 's rights. Sojourner Truth was a slave. The battle in Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest battles. There were 50,000 casualties and it lasted 3 days. This battle was the turning point in the war. Lincoln dedicated the battlefield as a national cemetery. “The Gettysburg Address” is considered one of the most eloquent, moving and historic speeches in American history. “It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain- that this, nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom- and that government for the people, by the popple, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Lincoln said. He is saying we need to not let those people die for no reason that we need to do something for their death. He also talks about how people gave their lives that the nation might live. This address help end the Civil War and then help the slaves. The slaves after this war got to vote and were finally free. Benjamin was a crucial participant in the American Revolution. He was also the most influential person in “inventing the type of society of America would become.” Franklin covered many arguments in the draft of the Constitution: slavery, taxation, representation, impeachment and powers of the branches. “In these sentiments, Sir i agree to this Constitution with all my faults, if they are such; because I think a general Government necessary for us,and there is no form of Government but what may be a blessing to the people if well administered, and believe farther that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in Despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic Government, being incapable for any other.” Franklin said. Even with the faults of this and it might not help, he knows it going to be necessary for America to have them. Addressing the weak government to the president is the first step in fixing it. Having the Constitution help fixed many problems in America. Fixing the Constitution, made America grow more in government which we still have today.
