As a child, it didn’t take very long for me to figure out where my family stood financially and how that related to the greater population. My family was a pretty ‘typical’ middle-class family, owning a townhouse in a fairly quiet neighborhood. I lived with my biological parents, my little sister, and my dog. I also I have a lot of other family members close by, including 3 sets of grandparents (great grandparent too) and a few aunts, uncles, and a fair share of cousins within an hour away.

Most people aren’t in the best mood when they are hungry- but for me, in particular, this can be said without hesitation, so in a food deficit I would really be struggling with lack of energy and motivation. Maslow believed that these needs are the most basic and instinctive needs in the hierarchy and I would imagine this would definitely be the reality in my case. In a Poverty level budget, I would be able to give up most leisure activity in order to eat the necessary amount of food to feel satisfied. In the case of the extreme poverty budget, the amount of food doesn’t change much but my housing situation would and this would force me to live with at least 4 other people to keep the cost down. Living with 4 people would be tough at times because there’s always going to be a lack of personal space along with increased chances of discrepancies between people living there –especially since stress levels will be high. My father could have been incarcerated for a non-violent drug offense and mother busy working to make ends meet while I try to do the same because that’s all I was taught. I may have gone into an interview for a base level government job and I tell them what neighborhood I’m currently living in within Baltimore and in their mind, they know from there that they don’t want to hire me based on that fact alone.
