Decent Essays
The ‘Grim Sleeper’ is a serial killer that was not caught for over two decades. The same suspect got linked to 11 different murders. Since he took a 14 year pause in his killings, the public named him the ‘Grim Sleeper’. Lonnie Franklin Jr. is the man blamed for all of the murders. During his trial, his attorney tried to tell the court that an expert hired by Lonnie’s defense connected DNA from two of the cases to a man named Chester Turner. Lonnie’s defense believed that 2 of the women he is being trialed for were not any of his killings. They believe the women were killed by Mr. Turner who is already in prison with a death sentence. But, the Judge denied the request to use the evidence of the DNA findings. I chose this article

Wrongful Conviction On the morning of August 10, 1984, Deborah Sykes was brutally stabbed, sexually assaulted, and eventually killed in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The man convicted for her murder was Darryl Hunt, a 19 year old boy that would go on to spend 20 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Hunt was convicted based on eye-witness testimony and informants, but was later exonerated based on DNA evidence that matched a man that was caught just a few months after the murder took place. This case is an exemplar of the strength of DNA evidence and the fragility of eyewitness testimony.…

A lot of people want to blame the parents of the offenders, asking “what did you turn your child into?” 36% of serial killers were physically abused, 26% were sexually abused, and 50% were psychologically abused (Mitchell and Aamodt 45). Many people have logically come to the conclusion that just because someone is abused, it does not mean that they will become a serial killer; or even a murderer; which is true. In the general population (people who have never committed murder) only 6% are physically abused, 3% are sexually abused, and 2% are psychologically abused (Mitchell and Aamodt 45). The dramatic difference of abuse frequency between people who are serial killers and people who are not seems evident enough to support that serial killers are created.…
