The conflict presented in this story is that Thomas along with his friends are stuck in a maze, in which the first person to arrive hasn't found an exist in three years, in which upon the only females arrival, Teresa, things start going from bad to worse. The sun suddenly stopped rising, stopping the crops from growing and leaving the cattle with no food. The huge stone doors also stopped closing, leaving them with no protection from The Grievers at night. The Grievers are huge metal made creatures that are only active during nighttime that are known to kill humans by stinging them. Now in desperate need to find an exit, Thomas along with the Gladers leaders rearrange the runners life long research of mapping the maze. Astonishingly the maps
