I.The Green leaf
A. When Pearl made the scarlet letter A out of seaweed it manifested her innocence and the her significance behind the meaning of the scarlet letter. Pearl creates the green letter “A” to compare with her mom and to represents nature and life.
1."As the last touch to her mermaid 's garb, Pearl took some eelgrass, and imitated, as best she could, on her own bosom, the decoration with which she was so familiar on her mother 's. A letter,--the letter A,--but freshly green, instead of scarlet!" (page 161)

Pearl was brought in the world from sin but yet, she is still innocent, while her mother is seen as to be full of sin. Hawthorne uses the sunlight as a symbol to portray her innocents.
1.“ ‘Mother’ ” said little Pearl, “ ‘the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom.’ ” (page 167)
a.Although, Pearl does not know the actual meaning behind the scarlet letter, she notices it’s the reason why they walk in darkness and her mother is unable to feel the sunlight. Hawthorne uses the sunlight to show it symbolism as innocence and Hester has lost her innocence through sin.
2.“ ‘No, my little Pearl!’ said her mother. ‘Thou must gather thine own sunshine. I have none to give thee!’ ” (page 88)
a.Hester believes she shouldn 't be rewarded at the slightest because of what she has done. Because the sunlight is a symbol of innocence Hester refuses to take it from Pearl and continue to carry out her punishment from the sin she committed. III.The scarlet dress
A.As Pearl wears the scarlet dress as a representation of the scarlet letter, we see a resemblance between Pearl and the dress. Hawthorne symbolizes the scarlet dress as a act of celebration for the purity of love.
1.“Was admirably adapted to Pearl’s beauty, and made her the very brightest little jet of flame that ever danced upon the earth.” (Page 92)
a.Pearl was created from love and is one thing Hester is not ashamed of. Hester must hide behind her sin but she can express these feelings though pearl. The scarlett dress symbolizes the purity of pearl in the outcome of love. Hawthorne does this to highlight this paradox.
