In William Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth”, Macbeth is a brutal king who killed people to keep his power. At the end, he is killed by Macduff and Malcolm becomes the king of Scotland. Macbeth and Malcolm are both hubris, but in different perspective. The term, “hubris” comes from the ancient Greek and Christian drama. In the ancient Greek, hubris means tragedy concerned the fall of a great man like the king Macbeth from a position of superiority to a downfall on account of his ambitious pride. Therefore, a true leader should consider other’s welfare first rather than one’s ambitious pride. Lady Macbeth persuaded Macbeth by saying, “I would, while it was smiling in my face, Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums, And dashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you Have done to this”(1.7.56~59). This quote directly attacks Macbeth by saying that she will do whatever she had promised even though it is killing her baby. This intimidates Macbeth to show his ambitious pride and show that he is a man by killing the king Duncan. The witches’ prophecy that he will become a king also stimulates him to kill the king.
