The Great Ziggurat of Ur is a ziggurat, which is “a temple of Sumerian origin in the form of a pyramidal tower, consisting of a number of stories and having about the outside a broad ascent winding round the structure, presenting the appearance of a series of terraces,” it is considered one of the largest ziggurats in Mesopotamia. This structure was built in the Third Dynasty of Ur (2150 BCE) in the Mesopotamian city of Ur which is also modern day Tell el-Muqavyar, Iraq. The city of Ur was founded around 3800 BCE as a city state of the civilization of Sumer, which is considered one of the earliest human civilizations. This structure was constructed around 2551-2528 BCE in the IV Dynasty of Egypt or Old Kingdom and is located on the boarder of modern day El Giza, Egypt. The civilization of Ancient Egypt which was located on the lower part of the Nile River and was discovered to have been founded around 3100 BCE which is called the Early Dynastic Period. The Ancient Egyptians are known for their massive pyramids, obelisks and temples as well as their mathematics, medicine and their techniques in agriculture. The structure of the Pyramid of Khufu had a patron whom of which is named Khufu as well, who is also known as Cheops which is his Greek name. Khufu was a Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt during the IV Dynasty which was around 26th century BCE. Khufu, like the other Pharaohs during the Old Kingdom period, amassed great wealth and was able to build massive and magnificent projects as you can see from the massive scale of the pyramid. The Pyramid of Khufu was constructed with roughly 2.3 million blocks of sandstone with each block weighing 2.5 tons and were transported from the quarry at the Giza plateau that they were mined and cut at and using wooden rollers and sleds all the way to the building site at Giza as well as thousands of slaves. All these sandstone bricks made it nearly a solid structure of sandstone, which was also originally covered in a casting of white limestone blocks where their angle would reflect the sun’s rays causing a dazzling effect. The dimensions of the pyramid is around 13 acres or one length being around 775 ft and 450ft high, but originally 480ft high but lost some over deterioration over time.
