Emily Dickinson and Edgar Allan Poe are two of the biggest poets from the 1800s. They are both great writers whose lives contributed to their styles of writing and who wrote about death. They both write about experiences of death and how it affect the living. Edgar Allan Poe lost his parents at the age of three. His later life was spent struggling with alcoholism and depression due to loneliness (May,Edgar Allan Poe).Poe’s writings often reflected a common theme of death because that is all he saw when he was growing up. According to Charles E. May in Edgar Allan Poe, Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19,1809. His father, David Poe was an actor, was neither talented nor responsible. The family suffered a great deal. His mom, Elizabeth Arnold Poe was a talented from an English theatrical family. He left him and his mother when Poe was two; and, a year later, his mom died of tuberculosis. Poe was taken in by Mr and Mrs. Allan but was never officially adopted. Later in life, he struggled with gambling and drinking. At the age of 25, John Allan died, leaving Poe out of his will. At age 27, he marries his thirteen-year-old cousin Virginia. The marriage only lasted 11 years because Virginia also died of tuberculosis.
