The wall was made entirely by hand and was built to protect the Chinese from intruders. Known in Chinese as the “Long Wall,” it has captivated the imagination of both Chinese and non-Chinese for centuries. Although the wall has been around for over 2,000 years and parts of the wall are decaying and crumbling, it remains a popular attraction today and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The history of the Great Wall began in the first millennium, when feudal states constructed defensive walls along their borders. The state of Chu was the first to build a wall, followed by the Qi, Yan, Wei, Zhao and Qin (Schwartz). Each of the states built walls to defend themselves and had soldiers stationed at the wall to keep intruders out. When these states existed the wall was about 3,100 miles long and each of the six different states owned different parts (Schwartz). The emperor at the time was Emperor Qin Shihuang and he wanted the states to become a unified kingdom. His plan was successful and resulted in the first unified kingdom …show more content…
Due to the fact that many dynasties helped in the building of the wall and many sections are located in isolated mountains, grasslands or deserts; the investigation of the size of the wall was difficult. However on April 18, 2009, after a full investigation it was announced that the Great Wall is 5,500 miles long and wall in Beijing measures over 342 miles long (Waldron). The Great Wall is no doubt the largest manmade creation in the world. According to Waldron, the wall passes 156 countries in ten cities or provinces including Liaoning, Hebei, Tianjin, Beijing, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Gansu and Qinghai. The wall contains 723 beacon towers, 7,062 lookout towers, 3,357 wall platforms and 1,026 other ruins

The first reason the benefits of the Great Wall outweigh the costs is trade increased. For example, many imports from many other nations were brought into China (Document D). Because of the wall's association with the First Emperor's supposed tyranny, the Chinese dynasties after Qin usually avoided referring to their own additions to the wall by the name "Long Wall".[14] Instead, various terms were used in medieval records, including "frontier(s)" (塞, sāi),[15] "rampart(s)" (垣, yuán),[15] "barrier(s)" (障, zhàng),[15] "the outer fortresses" (外堡, wàibǎo),[16] and "the border wall(s)" (t 邊牆, s 边墙, biānqiáng).[14] Poetic and informal names for the wall included "the Purple Frontier" (紫塞, Zǐsāi)[17] and "the Earth Dragon" (t 土龍, s 土龙, Tǔlóng).[18] Only during the Qing period did "Long Wall" become the catch-all term to refer to the many border walls regardless of their location or dynastic origin, equivalent to the English "Great Wall".[19] The current English name evolved from accounts of "the Chinese wall" from early modern European travelers.[19] By the 19th century,[19] "The Great Wall of China" had become standard in English, French, and German, although other European languages continued to refer to it as "the Chinese…

The great wall was built in the year of 1976 with a team of many youths, artists, and historians that collaborated under the direction of very well-known Chicana artist Judith Francisca Baca. Judith wanted to make sure that the young people understood the artwork they created. Therefore, historians, scholars, ethnologists and community members met with participants throughout the process. The Great Wall of China, one of the wonders of the world, spans about 5,500 miles long from the West Korean border into the Gobi Desert. The wall was used for a defense to protect themselves from the Mongols and other invaders. The workers came from three types of groups: soldiers, peasants, and criminals. The Great Wall has been modernized and impacted by people by construction of towns, houses, and adding utility poles. I found the lookout towers interesting, because when the Chinese experienced an enemy attack, the watchers would often use a signal fire to alert others.…

Have you ever seen the Great Wall of China and wondered what it REALLY took to build such an amazing world wonder? Well, even though the Great Wall was designed by multiple dynasties to protect China from invading mongols thousands of years ago, it took more than just hard work and time to construct. The Great Wall of China’s costs can heavily outweigh the benefits of how it caused China to go hungry, out of debt, and how it costed the lives of many workers and peasants forced to build it. As a result, building the Great Wall costed the lives of many people and left families without loved ones. As proven in Document E, over a million people died while building the Great Wall.…
