Practical self- determination is the growth of a person and them being able to use their learned knowledge to benefit their future. Self-determination strives for a subconscious need to fulfill innate psychological needs. The three basic needs include competence, relatedness, and autonomy. Throughout the film “War Witch” (Rebelle), the viewer is able to witness the growth of Komona since the start of her involvement with the Rebels. It is through the interaction with the Great Tiger, the Magician, and the Butcher as well as others that help Komona discover her practical self-determination.

This scene is where Komona’s self-determination can be grasped, unlike when she was asked to kill her parents she stands up for what she believes and is willing to be killed alongside him. Continually after his death her strength that she has built up continues to show. Komona focuses on how she needs to return to her village to bury the bodies of her parents. Komona understands now more about what is happing in the war and has a better understanding of how to control things within her life. When her parents died she had no one to turn to, however, this time, she knows she still has the support from the Butcher. After the death of Magician and her leaving the Great Tiger, the Butcher is able to fulfill her need for support, safety, and a loving relationship for her to continue to grow. The Butcher confesses to her that he thinks of her as a daughter and once again her need for the basic psychological needs have been met. It is clear that Komona has grown and has learned how to overcome and resolve her own
