Faith in the American Dream started when “Horatio Alger Jr. published his first “rags to riches” novel featuring Ragged Dick, a penniless young man who works his way up from poverty to a position of respectability” (539). From this perspective, the American Dream is available to anyone as long as they work hard to achieve financial success. Furthermore, this statement argues that everyone has the opportunity to seek the values of the American Dream. On the other hand, however, others argue that it does not exist anymore due to the unstable economy. According to Robert Reich, an economist, “As long as the income and wealth keep concentrating at the top, and the great divide between America’s have-mores and have-lesses continues to widen, the Great Recession won’t end, at least not in the real economy” (612). According to this view, income inequality is extremely prevalent in society today. However, Reich overlooks that income inequality is actually healthy for the economy: “In the case of China and India, the rise in inequality came along with an acceleration of economic growth that raised the standard of living for both the rich and the poor” (582). He grew up in Montgomery without much money. His oldest sibling did not have the opportunity to college, but luckily he had the chance to graduate from Auburn with a major in business. In fact, he is a first-generation college student. After college, he worked as an accountant for a CPA firm in Montgomery, an accountant for TBS in Atlanta, and the Vice President of USA Mobile. Eventually, he quit and ended up being the Vice President of a concrete block manufacturer that sells all over the Southeast. Around ten years after working for the company, he started his own business as a masonry contractor who has built schools, hospitals, retail, and churches. He coordinates multiple crews who work on various job sites. He still manages to work full-time at each job. Since he is the owner or co-owner of each business, he works all the time, including beyond the normal work hours of eight to five. Additionally, he often travels to supervise jobs. Because of his hard work, ambition, and intelligence, he is able to say that he has achieved the American
