Hercules: A Short Story

It all started 40 years ago, when my small village was visited by a roman general. I lived in Eryx, a city in the west of Sicily. We were about 3 km from the sea. Our city has a grand legend surrounding it, one that involves the great Hercules. I detest that man, but I have to admit he was an incredible fighter. Anyway, the story goes, that after Hercules captured the herd of Geryon, the prize bull escaped. This bull then swam to the island of Sicily. Eryx, the son of Poseidon, was our king at the time. He found the bull and took him into his own flock. When Hercules came demanding the bull back, Eryx refused. Why should he have given this cow to this stranger? It was his now, and he did not want to lose it. So Eryx challenged Hercules to …show more content…
In your pack, you carried Buccellatum, Frumentum, and Papilio. Buccellatum and Frumentum, were my hard tack and corn rations while the Papilio, was my leather tent. I wore a Galea, or a helmet, and a Lorica Segmentata, which was my plate armor. The most defining part of the roman defense though, was the Scutum. THis was a huge wooden shield that would protect me, and my neighbors. When I was in the first row of the Scutum wall, I had to use my Gladius, or short sword. When I was in the the last rows, I used my Pilum, which was a 7 foot long javelin. Now that you know what gear we had, I will tell you what we could do with it. Since the Scutum was huge, the roman army had created formations to best protect the legionnaires. One of my favorites, was called the turtle. The first line would remain normal, while the second and third row would raise their shields. This stopped arrows, and other thrown projectiles from hitting us on the head. We trained for a year, until the General said he had great news. We were being deployed to Britain! I was shocked that our legion would be so lucky, and be able to fight in the name of Rome. When we arrived in Britain, I realized that we were not lucky, at …show more content…
We were stationed on a wall the Romans had built. This wall was made to separate the Roman-occupied south, and the Celtic North. Nothing happened for two months, until a celtic army appeared one morning. They started to taunt us, and we rushed out to fight. They lured us out into the forest, where our fancy strategies would be useless. I was hit on the head and miraculously rolled into a hole under some tree roots. When I woke up, it was almost dark. I tried to leave my little shelter, but heard a voice tell me to stop. About 30 seconds later, I heard a two men walk by. One Was the celtic leader, but the other sounded

Here is a mural glorifying the trials and ultimate glory of Former President Barack Obama, who is illustrated as Rome’s Hercules. The three scenes depict Obama during his presidency, during the campaign of current President Donald Trump, and his status post-election. The first scene demonstrates Obama holding a boulder, which symbolizes his metaphorical strength as he carries the burden of the United States on his shoulders in a Herculean fashion; Hercules too had “the weight of the world on his shoulders,” often doing the seemingly impossible for his people. The second scene illustrates Trump placing the poisonous cloak that inevitably leads Hercules to his death. In terms of the mural, the cloak represents the slander and defamation of Obama that Trump perpetuated throughout his campaign in efforts to turn the American people against the former president.…

His son, now a grown man, is ruling his land and trying to stop suitors from marrying his mother and gaining power of the kingdom. “First by far to see her was Prince Telemachus, sitting among the suitors, heart obsessed with grief..” (Homer., Fagles, and Knox 81). The tale of a hero is one of the most classic of stories, told in various forms throughout the ages. Every hero, classical and modern, has different strengths, weaknesses, and challenges that they demonstrate and face along the way, exhibiting traits that prove them a hero. While there is no doubt that the central figures of the Greek myths of Perseus, Hercules, and Atalanta are all heroes, Hercules, strong both in will and physically, stands as the best example of a classic hero. Heroes are not made without challenges, some of which they face early on in their journey. Hercules and Atalanta meet their first struggle as children, with the goddess Hera sending the former “two great snakes [that] came crawling into the nursery” (Hamilton 228), which Hercules promptly kills, and the latter being “left on a wild mountainside to die of cold and hunger” (Hamilton 246) by her father.…
