The story “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “The Open Boat” has many different qualities they both share. They both display a prominent use of the same key figures of speech, but one that stands out the most for both is imagery. Imagery is any sensory detail in a work. Meaning anything that seems very detailed and that can be imaged in people’s minds is imagery. Throughout the whole story they show a pattern of imagery very deeply. Another key figure of speech that both of the books use is third person. Third person is when you use either, they, he, or she in the story. For instance in the story “The Yellow Wallpaper” when it says, He said I was his darling and his comfort and all he had, and that I must take care of myself for his sake, and keep well” (313). This shows a very vigorous use of third person, because of the many times it use “He” in the sentence. An example of how “The Open Boat” uses third person is when it said, “They were travelling, apparently, neither one way nor the other. They were, to all intents, stationary. They informed the men in the boat that it was making progress slowly toward the land” (249). This is a perfect example on how “The Open Boat” uses third person. This quote also shows how the narrator is following on what all the characters are doing. The thing that sucks about being married in this period of time is that, it was very frond a pond if anyone got a divorce. So, the only way to not have a husband, is if the husband pass away. Now what “The Open Boat” is trying to argue is that, even though they all might die on the ship, they still try to make the best of it and try to stay alive as long as they can. Life is not something that we can control, so we have to make the best out of it, anyway we can with what we have. So, that’s why the Oiler, tries to stay positive throughout the story while everyone was being very negative about the whole situation. Even though the Oiler was the most positive one out of all of them, he was the one that ended up dying. Even with both of the stories being totally different from each other, they both ended on a sad
