The Great Gatsby Repeated Analysis

The question of the past being repeated is prevalent in this chapter. When Gatsby and Nick are discussing Daisy and Gatsby insinuates that he does not understand why she has not left Tom for him, Nick says that the past cannot be repeated. Gatsby then exclaims that the past can be repeated, and assures that he is “going to fix everything just the way it was before” (Fitzgerald). Gatsby is in love with Daisy, and is hoping that the two can be together just like they were five years before. Gatsby wants to “recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy” (Fitzgerald). Gatsby is stuck in the past. He is trying to bring the past to life. Gatsby wants his life with Daisy five years ago to be his life today. However, Daisy is still married to Tom, and Gatsby appears to seem hopeful that one day she’ll just leave Tom and never look back. However, circumstances, feelings, and people change over time. Daisy leaving Tom is not as simple as Gatsby thinks it is; Daisy cannot just leave her daughter and go to Louisville to marry Gatsby as if it were five years ago. Gatsby wants …show more content…
I used to think Gatsby used the money he received from the death of his wealthy parents to buy the house in West Egg, and was solely motivated to make more money because of Daisy. Now, however, I understand that Gatsby was motivated to become rich because he came from a poor family of farmers, and wanted to live the life of luxury which Dan Cody lives. Gatsby changed his name and turned from a poor son of poor farmers into a dedicated worker because he was motivated by his own desires to achieve and to be wealthy, rather than to impress Daisy. Although I think Daisy did encourage him to continue to be involved in business practices which rendered him a significant amount of money, she is not the sole reason why he has the money he does.
