“Can’t repeat the past?’ he cried incredulously. “Why of course you can!” This is a quote by the main character from the book “The Great Gatsby”, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This quote sums up Gatsby perfectly. Although he isn’t the narrator of the story, Gatsby is, without a doubt, the main character and protagonist. In the beginning of this classic novel, Gatsby is a mysterious, hopeful entrepreneur, h owever, by the end of the novel he is a tragic hero whose faults cause his downfall.
Gatsby’s name wasn’t always Gatsby. It used to be James Gatz. In the novel, there is a quote that reads,”He must have been thinking about it(changing his name) for a while.” This shows how uncomfortable Gatsby was in his old life. Gatz has a meaning of “companion.” ” He was a companion, but only for few people. It is also a slang term for gun. This is ironic, because Gatsby ends up getting killed by a gun. “Miss Baker?’ he inquired. “ I beg your pardon, but Mr.Gatsby would like to speak to you alone.’ “With me?’ she exclaimed in surprise. “Yes, madame.” She got up slowly, raising her eyebrows at me in astonishment.”(page 50) This shows that Gatsby is mysterious because Jordan is surprised that he wants to talk to her. In addition, he wants to talk to her in private, at his own party. He is rumored to have killed a man. (This is coincidentally foreshadowing.) Gatsby is an “Oxford man”, but nobody ever sees any degrees or proof of him going there. Gatsby is also hopeful. He throws those parties in hope of Daisy.However, as this story unfolds, Gatsby becomes deeper. We learn that he is really just lonesome man stuck in the past. “Can’t repeat the past?” he cried incredulously. “Why of course you can!” This shows furthermore how Gatsby is stuck in the past, and how he won’t let go of it.
