Thought Piece - Chapter Seven (p. 113-145)
New Characters:
1. "Pammy" - daughter of Tom and Daisy. Seems to not have the care she needs from her mother.
2. Michaelis - prime witness at the crime scene of Myrtle's murder. Claims the murderer ran her over and drove away
3. "Well-dressed Negro" - says that the car that hit Myrtle was "big and yellow"
Themes:
1. Nothing can last forever
2. Everything from your past can come back to bite you
3. A mundane lifestyle is a trap that can only be broken if one is willing
Summary:
Nick notices that Gatsby's lights are not on for a party on the usual day he has them so he goes to visit him and learns he has fired all of his old servants and hired new, shadier ones fearing for rumors that might be spread of he and Daisy. Later, Nick …show more content…
"‘What’ll we do with ourselves this afternoon,’ cried Daisy, ‘and the day after that, and the next thirty years?’…'everything’s so confused. Let’s all go to town!’"
We can see the deterioration of Daisy's character coming out in this scene. She's envisioning herself trapped in the same mundane life, doing the same things thirty years from now. She says everything is "so confused" when she is really just lost about what to do of the situation.
2. "Daisy and Tom were sitting opposite each other at the kitchen table… They weren’t happy, and neither of them had touched the chicken or the ale—and yet they weren’t unhappy either."
The reader now views the rich relationship between Tom and Daisy for what is really is, a desperate struggle to keep one another at least in a neutral state of mind out of fear that something in each of their lives might change. Daisy seems bored by her stagnant lifestyle, but is too worried about what might happen if she were to lose Tom, and Tom sees Daisy something as a novelty perhaps for appearances or as something to prove to himself that he is a
