Thanks for bringing in new information to the conversation. I agree with most of your post, and I would like to add that Gatsby is now in some real trouble because of Daisy. As we learned in chapter VII, Gatsby becomes willing to take responsibility for her reckless driving. The power of his love compels him to do the most stupid things, including serving time in prison for a woman who only semi-loves him. I find it interesting that you mentioned Gatsby seeing Daisy’s flaws. Gatsby’s biggest problem consists of not being able to see problems in his own plans or her. His mind seems to not understand the severity of the situation of the situation or the practicality of his personal agenda. If Daisy and Tom left each other and went in their own

The first time Gatsby sees Daisy in over 5 years Nick believes that “There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams”(Fitzgerald, page 95). Although Daisy is aware of Gatsby’s dreams of being together again and moving back to Louisville to continue where they left off, she has no interest in staying with him for long but does not let him know she won’t leave her husband. She knew that she could never be the Daisy Gatsby had once loved and still fantasizes over but she does not admit this to herself and watches him continuously bend over backwards for her. Daisy used Tom for a life of luxury and for his place in society, while at the same time got a deep and sincere love and appreciation from Gatsby.…

If Gatsby had been able to accept reality for what it truly was then he would have been able to see her for what she really was. Tom, Daisy’s husband and an old friend of Nick’s, was just as bad as Daisy. They, “smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money.” (Fitzgerald 179). Tom and Daisy were horrible people that only cared about themselves and were willing to let someone else die to protect their name while using their money to remove themselves from the situation.…

Daisy carelessly destroyed Gatsby’s dream by rejecting him, but to her it was not even of great consequence, as she just ends up back with Tom, still “safe and proud” with her money and class. When Tom reveals all of the shady ways Gatsby has acquired his money, Daisy turns away from Gatsby because she no longer feels that he can provide her with the security she has had all of her life: “with every word she was drawing further and further into herself, so that he gave up, and only the dead dream fought on as the afternoon slipped away, trying to touch what was no longer tangible, struggling unhappily, undespairingly, toward that lost voice across the room” (134). Daisy does what is natural for her to do, turning to Tom who is secure is his class and wealth, and in doing so destroys Gatsby’s dream, and getting rid of all the purpose in Gatsby’s life because he has placed it all in Daisy. The last scene in this chapter describes Gatsby watching Daisy’s house because he is afraid that Tom will hurt her, but it is unnecessary because there is no more dream for Gatsby to protect anymore and…

The characters within the story and even the average reader become convinced that Daisy should flee the scene. Indeed Nick describes Daisy’s situation at the end of the first chapter as “It seemed to me that the thing for Daisy to do was to rush out of the house, child in arms ...” (Fitzgerald 23). From Tom’s racism on page 16, to his mistress calling during dinner on page 17, both the reader and characters have plenty of reason to dislike Tom, but Daisy remains with him regardless. Unfortunately for Tom, this mistreatment of Daisy eventually sets the scene for Gatsby’s return into Daisy’s life.…

He is focused so much on Daisy that he does not consider on what she wants to happen in their relationship. During Tom and Gatsby’s argument about loving Daisy , Gatsby cried “It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved any one except me!”(Fitzgerald 130). Gatsby’s love for Daisy binds him from seeing her and Tom’s relationship. It makes him think that Daisy is also obsessed with him just like he is over her. Gatsby would not consider leaving somewhere without Daisy until knowing what she was going to do with Tom ,“He was clutching at some last hope and i couldn’t bear to shake him free”(Fitzgerald 148).…

East and West eggers have different kinds of money which causes them to act in cruel or odd ways and reflect on the people that have “new money” and “old money” which will result from the American Dream. Symbolically people that are from West Egg are people that recently achieved the American Dream and citizens from East Egg are people that are have received money from past generations that were originally (symbolically) a West Egger. Gatsby is great example of a West Egger; he was once poor but has now achieved the American Dream and has lots of “new money”. Due to the fact that Gatsby was once quite poor, he wants to cover up his past so that he can fit in with all the other rich folk. In order to this Gatsby hosts many lavished parties,…

This passage exemplifies the two themes, dreams and the past, and gives a deep characterization of Jay Gatsby. Specifically, Fitzgerald uses strong and meaningful word choice when he uses the words “orgastic” and “recedes.” This exemplifies the fact that the future can be intensely exciting, but as each day is completed, one day is taken away from the future. Soon enough, the future will have passed. Gatsby attempted to build a future based on his past; however, he was not successful.…

Nick narrates Gatsby's pursuit of rekindling an old relationship with Daisy Buchanan and achieving his concept of the ideal life. Nick describes Gatsby during one encounter as, "pale as death, with his hands plunged like weights in his coat pockets... standing in a puddle of water glaring tragically into my eyes." (91) Given this pail, ghostly image of Gatsby, the reader is likely to associate Gatsby with feebleness and tragedy. Gatsby's actions are again depicted as hopeless later in the story when he is having nostalgic recollections of previous intimacy with Daisy.…
