The Great Gatsby Movie And Book Comparison Essay

The two versions of “The Great Gatsby,” the novel and movie, are similar and different in many ways. They both surround the mystery of the great Gatsby himself, his past shrouded in mystery and deceit. Yet, these two versions have some differences. From Nick having different ways of first being presented, to the difference in glamour of Gatsby’s first party of the story, to the additional setting that is presented through the movie, that was not presented in the opening of the novel, nor the rest of the novel. Nick is the narrator through the movie and novel, the reader/view sees the story from his point of view. In the novel, Nick begins with a piece of advice that his father gave him, and relates throughout the rest of the novel. ““Whenever you feel like criticizing someone,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” (Chp:1 pg:5) He continues on to tell of his past, his life and everything that has to do with him. In the novel, twins in yellow dresses appear at the party, whom are never seen in the movie. “...and gave ear to two girls in twin yellow dresses who stopped at the foot of the steps.” (chp:3 pg:47) The party in the novel also seems to be a bit calmer than the extravagant, energetic version that is shown in the movie. Another difference is that in the movie, there were fireworks, streamers, glitter, etc, no such thing is mentioned in the novel. Another occurrence in the movie was that “Owl Eyes” was not as amazed at the books as he was in the novel. In the novel he shouted “Absolutely real --- have pages and everything.
