Shades of Grey
Some things in life are completely unclear to us, we may feel a certain way about something and at the same time we feel the opposite. This lack of clarity is called ambiguity, and if you understand that some things can have more than one meaning, things will become more clear. The idea of Jay Gatsby is ambiguous because of his questionable life, although everything he does is because of his love for Daisy Buchanan. Lance Armstrong was a hero to the world because of his accomplishments, but when the truth is revealed about his cheating all of his accomplishments are removed from our minds and our ideas of this athlete are tarnished, regardless of his success.

Lance had been an athlete all his life, and a professional since he was sixteen. He competed in many triathlons but eventually branched off into cycling because it was his best, and favorite event. At the peak of his career, after obtaining many medals and building the foundation of an impressive career Lance was diagnosed with testicular cancer. The tumors spread and grew exponentially, eventually bringing his chances of survival down from eighty-five percent to forty percent. Armstrong continued to believe that he would competitively race again, and after surgery and much more chemotherapy he was cancer free in February of 1997 (Biography.com). The inspiration that Lance produced in people came from his return to cycling. He came back into the world of professional cycling the next year and in 1999 began his reign over the Tour de France races. Lance won seven of the races in a row, one of the most difficult races in the cycling world. Not only is this an amazing feat, he did it just two years after recovering from life threatening cancer. Lance was an idol, he had the whole world on his side until the truth began to uncover. After his recovery he began to use performance enhancing drugs, in 2012 he was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles, and in 2013 he confessed to all of the accusations. Lance Armstrong was a hero to the world, a cancer survivor and an athletic champion. He was a philanthropist and a role model but after the truth was revealed people were torn between hero and criminal
